Our Philosophy

Core Philosophy

At Camp AGQ, we value campers’ ability to make their own choices and engage in both structured and unstructured free play. Campers explore independent decision-making when setting their daily activity hours. Here, campers are given the freedom to choose among our 11 different daily activity areas.

Our Activity Area Specialists plan a variety of engaging programs that focus on exploration and skill development. Structuring programming around exploratory learning, campers are encouraged to connect with their environment, take safe risks and uncover new interests.

We believe that when campers can design their own day, they develop the essential skills, confidence, and autonomy that contribute to becoming well-rounded adults. Because campers of all ages choose their own day, they have opportunities to build community and friendships outside their own cabin.

THE IMPORTANCE OF UNSTRUCTURED TIME

Twice per day, our camp has free play for campers, which we refer to as “Free Swim” and “Free Time”.

Free play helps campers think creatively, learn to prioritize their time, and practice decision-making. Camp is a safe space for kids to make decisions and navigate the ramifications of those choices, both positive and negative. By using a free play model and Choice-Based activity selection, they learn how their decisions can affect them and the community they are living in.

Camperships

GIVING THE GIFT OF CAMP

Every child deserves the chance to experience camp. Camp is a space for kids to truly explore their authentic selves, build community, and, above all, have fun.

Attending overnight summer camp has a lasting impact on kids, with long-term benefits that extend far beyond the summer. Since the Ann Arbor YMCA purchased Camp AGQ in 1966, we have provided scholarships for nearly 100 campers each year. These opportunities are made possible by the support of our community, generous donors, and grants, which help us support more children and families in sharing all that camp has to offer.

If you are able, please help give a child the gift of camp this summer by donating through the button below.
