Our Philosophy

Core Philsophy

At Camp AGQ, we value campers’ ability to make their own choices and engage in both structured and unstructured free play. Campers explore independent decision-making when setting their daily activity hours. Here, campers are given the freedom to choose among our 11 different daily activity areas.

Our Activity Area Specialists plan a variety of engaging programs that focus on exploration and skill development. Structuring programming around exploratory learning, campers are encouraged to connect with their environment, take safe risks and uncover new interests.

We believe that when campers can design their own day, they develop the essential skills, confidence, and autonomy that contribute to becoming well-rounded adults. Because campers of all ages choose their own day, this creates opportunities for them to build community and friendships outside their own cabin.

THE IMPORTANCE OF UNSTRUCTURED TIME

Twice per day, our camp has Free Play for campers, which we refer to as Free Swim and Free Time.

Free Play helps campers think creatively, learn to prioritize their time, and practice decision-making. Camp is a safe space for kids to make decisions and navigate the ramifications of those choices, both positive and negative. By using a Free Play model and Choice-Based activity selection, they learn how their decisions can affect them and the community they are living in.

Camperships

One thing we know to be true is that all kids need camp. Camp is a space for kids to truly explore their authentic selves, build community, and, above all, have fun.

We know the impact attending summer camp has on kids and the long-term benefits it provides. But we also know that camp is not always financially accessible. Since the Ann Arbor YMCA purchased Camp AGQ in 1966, we have provided scholarships for nearly 100 campers each year. Without the support of our community, generous donors, and grant opportunities, this formative experience would not be available to many kids across our communities.

If you are able to provide the gift of camp to a child this summer, you may do so using the button below.
